Allergy pulse test
We are bombarded by sensitivities and allergies in our environment. Hearing stories from others about the many foods they cannot tolerate may create uncertainty about our own diet. One way to better understand what foods your body isn't easily processing is called the Allergy Pulse Test.
Step one:
Start with just one food to test. Sit down and relax for a while, allowing your pulse to find regularity at your resting heart rate.
Step two:
Once you have been sitting for a few minutes, and are completely relaxed, start a timer for one minute and count your pulse in those 60 seconds. You may want to do this initial pulse three times and take the average to be sure that you are counting your heart rate closest to your true resting heart rate.
Below are average heartbeat per minute ranges for varying age groups
Newborn Infants: 100 to 160 beats per minute
Children 1-10: 70 to120 beats per minute
Children over 10: 60 to 100 beats per minute
Adults: 60 to 100 beats per minute
Well trained athletes: 40 to 60 beats per minute
Step three:
Once your resting heart rate has been documented, try a bite of the food you are questioning a sensitivity to. After swallowing a bite of the food, wait 20 minutes then test your pulse again. This will give the food time to go to the digestive tract where the allergic reaction is most likely to occur. If your heart rate is more than 10 beats per minute higher than your resting heart rate, cease from eating this food for a month, then test again at that time.
Tips to get the most accurate results:
In the 20 minute waiting period between your resting heart rate pulse and your food test pulse, try to stay seated so you can get the most accurate pulse read. This way, you can be certain that your pulse is being raised by the reaction you may be having instead of any walking or standing.
Try to get the purest form of food you are testing. For example, if you are questioning whether or not you have an allergy to wheat, try a bit of plain wheat cereal instead of a muffin. The more ingredients that are in the food you are eating, the more challenging it will be to pinpoint which ingredient you are having a reaction to.
Supplementation
If you are considering supplementation for your food sensitivities, try to only add one supplement per week so you can fully assess how your body feels when you are using it, instead of bombarding your system with supplements before finding the ingredient that your body needs help digesting.
Some supplements are beneficial in reducing allergy symptoms and heal inflammation caused by the sensitivity:
Acidophilus- Contains helpful digestive enzymes your body may be underproducing as well as enhancing immune system function which will combat inflammation. Use as directed on bottle
Quercetin- Increases natural immunity and reduces reactions to certain allergens such as pollen and foods. Noticeable results may not occur until 1-4 weeks after taking quercetin. 500mg twice daily is the suggested dosage. I have been using quercetin for 4 months now and I have noticed great benefits with 250mg once at night or twice daily if I am around a lot of individuals who are sick or when I have been eating foods that are outside of my normal diet. Feel free to start slow or ask your provider for suggestions on dosages.
Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids: This is not a daily intervention but a monthly detox for allergens. This helps to flush the body of pollutants and allergens. The upper limit of safety for ascorbic acid in adults is 2,000 mg daily. So divide this dosaged of 2,000mg. To clarify: take only 1,000mg twice daily for two days. Below is the specified procedure for adults from the Book, Prescription for Natural Healing, by Phyllis A Blach.
Procedure for adults: (directly from Prescription for Natural Healing by Phyllis A. Blach pg. 866)
“Place 1,000 milligrams of ascorbic acid in a cup of water or juice. To make this drink, use ascorbic acid in the form of either esterified vitamin C, such as Ester-C, or a buffered product, such as calcium ascorbate. Take it again 30 minutes later. Take these two ascorbic acid drinks for one to two days. Repeat once a month”
